bea·con ('bE-k&n) n. - A source of guidance or inspiration.
Overview
Beacon is an alternative to the Windows Desktop. As its name implies, Beacon guides store managers through the tasks that they have to perform each day. This guidance is provided by various on-line help such as pop-up hints, context sensitive help, and searchable manuals.
Beacon not only secures your system from unauthorized users, but also prevents unauthorized operations such as software installs, moving or deleting files, destroying icons, snooping using the Windows file browser, and much more. By replacing the Windows desktop, Beacon helps to prevent viruses and greatly increases system up time.
Beacon To-Do Lists and Menus
When an item is selected on the To-Do list, a basic set of instructions and reminders appears to the right of the item. For additional guidance, the user can click the “Display More Instructions” which can result in the display of a HTML page, PDF document, or LinkUP SmartenUP eLessons player. To run the application, the user can double click on the item or click the “Do This Task” button. You can also restrict the user to launching only one application at a time.
